Walking Trails in the Ballyhoura Region


The Ballyhoura Way

The route crosses four upland stretches, one long one over the Ballyhoura Mountains (highest point Seefin, at 510 metres), two short ones over Benyvoughella Hill and Slievereagh, and then a long traverse on the southern flanks of the Slievenamuck ridge, overlooking the beautiful Glen of Aherlow. The aggregate ascent over the route is just over 1700m, and apart from a few short steep sections there are no significant climbs. More Information ...


Darby's Bed Loop Walk

Doneraile Park

Doneraile Park consist of 160 hectares of parklands with mature groves of deciduous trees and a number of deer herds. Doneraile Court, a fine Georgian mansion overlooks the park and was once the home of the St.Leger family. Darragh Hills Loop Walk

Distance: 10km Time: 2hr30mins – 3hrs. A forestry roadway which leads to a woodland track that meanders through a section of broadleaf woodland, ascending to the highest point of the loop close to the summit of Carrigeenamronely, then desending through forestry and a grassy downhill trail to your starting point. Donkey Sanctuary Loop Walk

The Sanctuary is set in the beautiful rolling countryside of County Cork just outside the village of Liscarroll in Ireland. Whilst on the walkway there are vantage points from which to see the donkeys, historical sites and village/countryside of Liscarroll. O’Briensbridge Loop Walks

Parteen Weir Loop (Green loop), 5km/1.5hrs. Old Barge Loop (Red Loop), 12km/3.5hrs. Errina Canal Loop (Blue Loop), 7km/2hrs. Combination Loop, 16km/4hrs. All three loops start and finish at the trailhead which is located on the bank of the river Shannon at the Riverside Park in the village of O’Briensbridge, approximately 14km from Limerick City and just off the R463. Ballinaboola Woods Loop Walk

Distance: 10km Time: 2hr30mins – 3hrs. Following the forestry road ascending to give you lovely views of the surrounding countryside before desending to your starting point. More Information ...


Canon Sheehan Loop Walk

Distance: 7km Time: 2 – 2.5hrs. Starting from Glenanaar Forest car park, you enter the forest, crossing the wooden footbridge from where the loop ‘proper’ begins. Follow the loop along the left bank of the Ogeen River. Enjoy the natural woodlands, watch out for the natural well, and be amazed in Maytime by the haze of bluebells in their thousands. Crossing the river by way of a footbridge means you pass from County Cork into County Limerick – enjoy the moment, a few hundred metres takes you across another footbridge and back into Cork again! A forestry road brings you southwards and a woodland track brings you back to the footbridge. More Information ...


Paradise Hill Loop Walk

Distance: 13km Time: 3hrs – 4hrs. A forestry walk with a long ascent to the highest point of the loop on the shoulder of Temple Hill. Blackrock Loop Walk

Distance: 11km Time: 2hr30mins – 3hrs. Starting from the Greenwood Forest on the Goat’s Path towards a quiet lane heading southeast along the valley, with Seefin Mountain rising to the right. Check out Castle Philip, an outlaw’s hideaway, before you reach the 528m high peak of Seefin. Follow the mountain track downhill to a parking area and out onto an old road.Take a left onto the forestry track and you will gently descend through Greenwood Forest. Watch out for the interpretive boards along the way, so you can identify the flora and fauna of the area. More Information ...


Benard Loop Walk

Distance: 18km Time: 4hrs – 5hrs. From a lane you enter forestry. While walking this long section of forestry road, you are afforded fine views on your right of Knockaceol (the hill of music). Enjoy the forested river valley before asending to the highest point of the loop on the shoulder of Temple Hill. Fine views open up on your left as you descend. More Information ...


Keale River Walk

A 7km river walk between the two villages of Glenroe and Ballyorgan, and is a level walk fenced from start to finish with many little bridges in between. It is completely safe and ideal for families. More Information ...


Carraig Aille Hill

This hill is located to the east of the lake and Knockadoon. Two stone ring-forts (cashels), along with associated hut sites, were discovered here. Occupation has been dated to the 8th-11th centuries AD. More Information ....
